Why Linen Canvas Matters

Canvas support is one of those details that matters more at year twenty than at year one, and it's worth understanding even though it rarely shows up in a photograph.

The genuine difference

Linen canvas is woven from flax fibre, which is naturally stronger and more dimensionally stable than cotton — it resists sagging and humidity-driven stretching better over decades, which is why higher-end and larger-format works are often built on it. Cotton duck is more affordable, takes paint slightly differently, and is a perfectly durable support for most works, particularly at moderate scale — the idea that cotton is somehow inferior is more market signalling than material fact for the vast majority of paintings' realistic lifespans.

Where it actually matters

The practical difference shows up most on very large canvases, where the support has to hold significant weight and tension over a big span without sagging, and in genuinely humid or variable climates, where dimensional stability matters more over time. On a moderately sized work in a stable indoor environment, the difference is close to academic.
